There is a stairwell in this picture leading up to the second floor. He does not remember this stairwell, when he worked for the company as a draftsman he was drafting on the second floor of the shop and always had to climb up a ladder in order to get up there. Not only that, but the ceiling was so short that you could not even stand up on the second floor, there was also no air conditioning so it was sweltering
